Pixel not found? What to check

What each check message means and how to fix it: the line is not there yet, a different token, Tag Manager, or no visits yet.

You pasted the line and the check still says no. Almost every case is one of five things, and each one has a message in Settings → Pixel. Find your message below.

What the check does

When you press Check, askbowtie fetches your homepage once and looks for the tracker line in the HTML your server sends. It follows redirects, so a site that sends the bare domain to www checks out fine. You can check again after 15 seconds; sooner than that we return the last answer.

A site moves through three states:

StateIt means
PendingNo tracker line found on the homepage yet.
VerifiedThe line is on your homepage. A line that carries your own token also proves the site is yours.
LiveA real visit has arrived. Traffic and conversions start filling in.

MessageWhat to do
We could not find the pixel yetOpen your live homepage, view the page source and search for bowtie.js. If it is not there, the deploy has not gone out or a cache is serving the old page. Give it a few minutes, clear the cache, check again.
The pixel carries a different tokenYour page has a tracker line, but not yours. Copy the line from Settings → Pixel and replace the old one. The token is unique to your site and is how we know it is yours.
Installed through Tag Manager? The check reads the HTML your server sends, so it cannot see a tag that Tag Manager adds in the browser. That is expected. Open your site in a new tab and your first visit confirms the install.
Checked seconds agoWait 15 seconds and press Check again.
No visits have arrived yetWe can see the pixel but nothing has been sent. Open your site in a new tab, then check again.

Visits missing even though it says live

  • Your own visits on WordPress. Logged-in WordPress browsing is excluded on purpose. Test in a private window, or signed out.
  • The line is on some pages only. It has to load on every page, so put it in the shared layout, not in one template. A single-page app needs it once in the root layout; route changes are followed automatically.
  • An old tokenless line. A tag without the token still sends events, but the site stays unverified and the data stays hidden from your agent. Copy a fresh line from Settings.
